Shaken

As I tossed and turned in bed trying to catch an afternoon nap, I still felt shaken..
I had just come back from watching the film Aamir.
At an extreme loss of words to type and thoughts overflowing in my head.. All my worries and problems seemed so extremely trivial and so very stupid... There is this constant ringing voice in my head telling me to do something.. The voice, which on normal days is quiet is screaming today.. I feel terribly guilty of not being of any significant use to all those who are suffering across the world..

The movies I have seen recently namely Khuda Kay Liye, Shaurya and Aamir and a book I finished reading just a few days ago- A thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled HosseinI has made me think more and more deeply about Islam. About people who have misunderstood all Muslims to be evil, about Muslims who are questioned and tortured time and time again by authorities suspecting them to be terrorists, about staunch Mullahs who have made life hell for Muslim women and turned innocent children to terrorists, the list just goes on and on and on.. It’s amazing how every crime committed by the staunch Muslims is in the name of religion.. In the name of the Prophet, the Koran, Jihad etc..

The Middle Eastern countries have not seen days of peace for centuries now.. Generations of Palestinians have shed their blood for a land which is not yet their country. Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and so many more nations where people have grown up midst war, some have fled to far away countries, some have fought, some have become mentally unstable and some have just survived it all.. Billions have been spent by the UN in peace-keeping efforts.. All in vain.. In "A thousand splendid suns" you can feel the beauty of the religion in sentences quoted from the Koran and from the poems of Muslim poets. But at the same time you cry along as you learn about the strife of the people who die, become homeless or become crippled by the war.. The women who are tortured beyond imagination and not allowed any individual growth in the name of Islam.. The soviets, the Mujahedeen, gunfire, bombing, martyrs, rapes, beatings, Taliban, 9/11, executions,... It was undoubtedly the most painful book I have ever read and gave me one of my worst nightmares ever.
Shaurya, where a dedicated army man who is a Muslim working under an anti-Muslim Major and Brigadier is made a blamed for helping terrorists when he actually saves the lives of innocent people.
Khuda Kay liye, where a humble Pakistani Musician is tortured to Mental instability because he is suspected to be involved in the 9/11 crash.
Aamir, where a Hard-working Muslim man gets badly caught in terrorism..

All these movies made by Brilliant people where the actors have given stellar performances had one thing in common- How Muslims who are good people become victims of circumstances and how those committing irrational crimes are roaming scot-free and continue making the world a hell for so many.
And it’s not just Muslims, every society, every community , every region, every country is faced with this problem..

But how do we find out who is to blame? How do we prove what is the right interpretation and what is the wrong interpretation of Islam? How do we make the guilty pay? How we the people of India help in such cases are the questions that keep coming in my mind and I stay as confused as ever about what will happen..

its tru that the muslims have been treated harshly by the soviets or the western world
but in a way the internal strife has hurt them much more
these movies just show the tip of the iceberg
what lies out there is far more
but for starters i think this is the way to go
good one nikita

completely agree with you about the current situation being hostile to most muslims

Religion is certainly not beautiful (i mean all religions, not just islam). As richard dawkins would say, it is the root of all evil.

Buddhism, originally wasn't even a religion...just a set of principles to live by.

You have read a few verses of the koran in that book, which probably make good poetry... Read any religious text in its entirety and you will realise what a work of fiction it is, be it the bible, koran, gita, or whatever. It is the content of those very 'holy' books that, to a large extent is responsible for the turmoil this world is faced with. And mind you, I am not only referring to the skewed interpretation of the verses that drives people to kill (btw, there are verses which vindicate killing for your religion too, just dig a little deeper). Religious books say that the universe was designed in 6 days and
put into being. In the face of compelling scientific evidence of the big bang, etc, I don't think those books hold even a candle to compel me to think otherwise.

I happened to read 'A thousand splendid suns' too. It is a moving tale, and my heart reaches our to those people who have suffered for decades... I saw a documentary on life in Iraq, and it was riveting.. Makes us realize the importance of freedom.

PS : For oversensitive people - No malice meant towards muslims. It was an anti-religion rant, equally opposed to all religions.

hindu texts a rant...certainly not!
theres a lotta truth behind those sanskrit hymns...hindu philosophy is the deepest and richest of them all its just that with so many gods in town we've just lost interest.........and ax! situtation been hostile to muslims?? it's their self-inflicted misery....other religions are in more need of sympathy and support than Islam...sry 'tis the effect of my trip to malaysia..kinda changed my perspective a bit

the vedas and upanishads were not hindu scriptures, originally. Generations of manipulation has led people to believe that vedas and upanishads are hindu scriptures.

As far as philosophy is concerned, every religion more or less preaches the same thing, some of which seems arbitrary and downright stupid and dumb to me (ie - dont eat non veg, kill for your religion, questioning the existence of god will condemn you to hell)

And technically speaking, hinduism isnt exactly a religion, it was just a set of philosophies turned traditions... which again has been bastardized over generations into a religion. Would you believe me if i said that some ancient hindu saints were atheists? Yes they were. Read about the sankhya philosophy.

Every religion has its pitfalls, but the extent to which those pitfalls reflects on how rigidly people adhere to its principles. Which is why you have Shiv Sena, SIMI, etc.

Also, it is downright stupid to categorize all Hindus as vegetarians or all Muslims as terrorists... may people overcome their ignorance....

"And technically speaking, hinduism isnt exactly a religion, it was just a set of philosophies turned traditions" ....exactly, its a philosophy, which doesen't force any rules or regulations upon you. No where is it written that people have to be vegetarians in fact one of the scriptures mentions a story about a sage ( Valmiki or Vashishtha, I'm forgetting which one) who out of hunger ate a dog....these restrictions are society enforced, hinduism has nothing to do with it...hell, hindu philosophy even talks about sex and incest like any other topic... its the people who chose to become close minded, selective about the lessons they decided to take in and ingnoring the rest! Its a proven fact that the Shiv Linga we worship is Shiva's cock, but ask any devout shaivaite and he'll hesitate to reply.... The essence of hinduism is that it just wants people to go with the flow, stay at peace with nature, have a great sex life, produce good offsprings...its the other religons who want you to go pray every friday or read the holy book 5 times a day......

The worst part about hindus (incl Mr Thackeray and his comrades, VHP and co, who seem to lead the pack) is that they don't know much about hinduism themselves. Sages and saints used to eat meat, too.

Infact, this whole concept of covering a woman in modern day hinduism is something borrowed from Islam.

Yes. that is true for most religions....all religious fanatics know little or nothing about their own religion, same goes for islam as was shown in Khuda Ke Liyeh. Misguided as Shiv Sena is, I still appreciate them for this one thing they are doing...and that is protecting hinduism...the one thing that I've always appreciated about hinduism is that hindus have never tried to force their religion onto others or try to convert them unlike Islam and Christianity...but that very fact is now turning into a bane for hindus...Islam is being promoted rather aggressively and spreading like a wildfire...if hindus do not want 2 convert the best they can do is protect their own people from conversion and Thackeray is doing a good job in keeping the muslims at bay in maharashtra...i understan that i sound like i'm 'anti-islam' but that is not the case...i'm not against wat islam teaches but i'm against the way the religion is being used as a tool to prmote political agaendas and the fact that the muslim masses think that it is their duty to convert the whole world into islam....accept it or not any country with large population of muslims will have problems.Period.

and ea about the purdah system or hijab as Islam calls it...the concept has existed amongst hindus too and with reason...a book called 'Hindusim and Modernity' explains that hindus believe (society norms mind you, the religion doesen't say anything on this) that a woman's sex appeal is meant only for the husband and in no case should be displayed to any other males in the family including the husban's father and brothers....considering how 'tharkey' Indian males generally are this was reason enough :D

dude abhi, does it matter if a man is Hindu, Muslim or, heck, even scientologist?
Damn, they are all praying to the same God, which i beleive is non-existent. Why can't everyone get over their religion? Religion is slavery. If you wanna believe in God, do it. But please don't rub hundred kilos of paste over yourself. And don't tell a guy going to a mosque or a church that he's doin it all wrong. Heck, maybe you are doing it wrong. What is Shiv Sena protecting us from? Damn, they are just good at breaking up stuff, causing traffic jams and burning people alive. Much like the rest of the religions. Hinduism is no different tha? Islam in these matters. Its just that it isn't publicised all over the world that way. You wanna do that too?
And buddy, Hindu scriptures, those are just some books that very old men in ancient India chose to write. At least there's some proof that their was a Jesus, a Buddha. I've never seen a proof of Ram.

Most of the world's political problems today are just a byproduct of religions. There's no denying that fact. Indo-Pak partition and subsequent wars, Israel- Middle east conflict, everthing. And Hindu orgs cause no less rampage in India. They are nothing more than repackaged terrorists.

take religion away...i'm all for it...i'm not in favour of nor against any religion( no wait maybe i am)...the point i'm trying to make is that if someone has faith in something then he should live by it but its when this faith becomes fanaticism is when these world problems arise, and nothing we do can stop this...come to think of it every religion reaches this high at some point of time...the Christians had their time during the colonial era and this century belongs to islam...

Nikita should be happy she's got longer comments than the post :]
@bullet4myvalentine :P
i'm glad I found a supporter, but i'll just clarify my stand on Thakray...I'm not a fan nor a supporter of their V-day bashing. I know he uses hinduism as a political agaenda but by his party's almost fanatic stand on hinduism at least he'll ensure nothing like the riots that happened after the bombay blasts shall occur. I too do not have any beef with Islam....I have pork with them :P
